Bowdoinham took important steps to a new public works facility on Thursday.
The deadline for contractors to submit bids to do the work was 10 a.m. Later in the day, the town’s planning board began the review process for the new facility, which will be located at 122 Pond Road.
Town Manager William Post previously said the current facility is a safety concern, and no longer fits the department’s needs. Its current location at 8 River Road, which was purchased in 1998, is not large enough to accommodate all of the department’s vehicles.
In addition, the building is not properly insulated, and has cracks in the floor. It could not be properly insulated without significant upgrades to the floor and framework. And, finally, upgrades would be difficult because the building sits on a flood plain and shoreland zone, and would likely have to be moved or elevated.
Post updated selectmen on the bid process progress at a Feb. 13 meeting, and said the town had already received 12 placeholders for the project. He noted that didn’t mean there were 12 separate bids, as subcontractors could be included in that number. Either way, the project has generated interest.
“There has been plenty of interest,” said Post at the meeting. “Engineers have been answering questions about the project non-stop.”

Post said he plans to have more information, including building designs, on the project posted on the town’s website within the next week or two.
Information on the new site will be included in the town’s newsletter for residents in March. A public information meeting will take place on March 13, with a potential date of March 28 for a town meeting.
The plan is for the project to be completed by January 2019.
