BATH — Alan Joseph Stewart, 90, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.

Alan was born and raised in Belmont, Massachusetts.

As a veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in England at the end of World War II. Following his service, he graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in engineering.

He raised a family, with his wife Mary, on Long Island and worked for a defense company designing missile guidance systems.

He returned to university as his family grew and studied physics, ultimately getting a doctorate in particle physics and quantum mechanics. He returned to industry doing research into advanced propulsion systems for the Navy.

After resettling in Hoboken, New Jersey, he began a second career as a college professor teaching a variety of science and math courses.

He later retired to Bath with his second wife, Alice. He never stopped learning and had a wide range of interests in sciences, math, architecture, history, music and literature. He was an early adopter of computers and built his own computer in the late ’70s. To the end, he was studying, reading and taking online courses.

Alan is survived by his son and daughter:

Glenn Stewart and Brenda McNurlin; his second wife’s children: Nancy, Audrey, Laura and David; his grandchildren: Collen and Brian and his great grandchildren: Sierra, Christopher, Ella and Samantha.
