TOPSHAM

A house at 5 Green St., was saved late this morning by firefighters called to fire that started on a stove.

Reported at about 10:45 a.m., firefighters from Topsham and Brunswick responded. Topsham had an engine that was just leaving Brunswick after providing station coverage as Brunswick Fire Department was fighting a fire and smoke conditions at the Cook’s Corner Mall.

Topsham Fire Lt. Justin Emmons said when Topsham firefighters arrived on scene, they saw fire showing from the side of the house. The stove had a hood vent which sent flames out of the side of the building, which means it did its job, Emmons said. There was some extension to the second floor. The fire was knocked down within 10 or 15 minutes. How the fire started is still under investigation.

A catering company works out of the house and an upstairs apartment is rented. The fire was contained to the corner of the kitchen space the catering company operates out of.

The caterer, her children and a dog were in the house when the fire was reported and all got out OK.

With two trucks on scene within minutes of the tone, it was a quick knock down, Emmons said, and “nobody got hurt.”

111 Maine Wedding & Event Catering lists 5 Green St. as its address on its website. According to the town’s online assessing data, the home is owned by Ian Talmage and Jennifer Banis and was built in the late 1800s.
