During Midcoast Senior College’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon on June 14 held at Thorne Hall, Bowdoin College, Howard Whitcomb of Brunswick was presented the 2016 Founders Award for his staunch support of MSC during the previous 13 years in numerous roles.

To acknowledge the contributions of the two co-founders of Midcoast Senior College, Nancy Wheeler and Jack Thompson, the Board of Directors established in 2009 the Wheeler/Thompson Founders Award. Presented annually at the Spring Luncheon, this award recognizes an individual who has supported the spirit and work of Senior College in significant ways.

“As a member of the MSC Board, Howard brought his skills in higher education administration to our organization. Early on, Howard served on the Curriculum Committee, becoming its chair for 8 years from 2006-2014.” said Midcoast Senior College Anthony Belmont. “During that time, he maintained the highest possible standards of academic excellence by vetting high quality courses and mentoring the faculty who taught them.”

As a faculty member teaching a wide range of courses, Whitcomb stimulated students with in-depth knowledge of the U. S. Supreme Court and the electoral process. His Watergate Retrospective course was so popular that he taught it three times.

The plaque and framed certificate was presented to Howard Whitcomb by Jack Thompson before more than 200 members, sponsors and invited guests.

Nominations are solicited each spring from among past and present members, students, faculty, volunteers, and others. The board makes the final selection.
