TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School eighth-grade softball team earned its first win of the season recently, downing Auburn, 9- 3.
Holly Temple pitched a solid game, striking out 11 and allowing four hits. She did not walk a batter.
Temple led all hitters with two singles and two RBIs.
In the fifth inning Emma Lapreziosa smacked a timely double and knocked in two runs to solidify the lead. Cassi Parsons had two hits, Gabie Head chipped in with one hit and an RBI, while Camille Rowe and Heather Gallant each had a hit.
Standouts on defense were Eagle catchers Bella West and Kassidy Dixon, second baseman Rowe, shortstop Gallant and pitcher Temple.
The Eagles are 1-3.
In seventh-grade action, Mt. Ararat rolled to a 12-2 win.
The Eagles collected nine hits, led by Ema Hawkes with two. She reached base all four times she came to the plate.
Mt. Ararat jumped on top with three runs in the opening inning. Leading 3-2, a three-run fourth and four-run fifth allowed the Eagles to pull away for the mercy-rule win.
Breanne Hunter went the distance for the win, allowing three hits and striking out five. Mt. Ararat’s defense was solid behind Hunter with no errors, highlighted by outstanding defensive plays by Hawkes, Jaden Lohr and Jaimey Weidner.
The Eagles (1-2) play at Auburn on Thursday.
