WASHINGTON (AP) — Maine authorities say a five-vehicle crash triggered by a lumber truck that rolled while rounding a corner has left two people dead and three injured.
The Knox County Sheriff ’s Office says a tractor trailer driven by 53-year-old Randall Weddle of Greenville, Tennessee, was heading west and the other four vehicles were heading east when the crash happened at about 5 p.m. Friday on Route 17 in Washington.
Deputies say the driver of the first car struck by the truck — 74-year-old Paul Fowles of Owls Head — was pronounced dead at the scene, as was the driver of a van that burst into flames. Confirmation of that driver’s identity is awaiting autopsy results.
Weddle, a passenger, and another driver were hospitalized with what authorities say were non-life-threatening injuries.
