BRUNSWICK
The Eastern and Western Maine Class A, B and C wrestling regionals were held Saturday at various locations with Mt. Ararat, Brunswick, Morse and Lisbon competing.
In Eastern Maine Class A action at Westbrook, Mt. Blue won with 168.50 points, followed by Cony (138), Skowhegan (135.50), Westbrook (96), Windham (92), Brewer (87), Mt. Ararat (68), Oxford Hills (55), Nokomis (54), Erskine Academy (45), Edward Little (27), Brunswick (6), Greely (18), Poland (12), Gorham (5) and Lawrence (0).
Brunswick’s Jared Jensen ran his MPA record to 44-0 as he recorded pins in his first two matches, won a third by injury default, and then nipped Johnny Weymouth of Windham 6-4.
“ He wrestled okay,” said Mt. Ararat coach Erick Jensen. “Johnny’s a tough kid but Jared was able to win it in overtime … and I’ve seen him wrestle better.”
For Mt. Ararat, Jacob Kenney lost to Tyler Craig of Mt. Blue via a pin at 1:21 in the 106-pound finals and teammate Corey Allen fell to John Swett of Skowhegan ( pin, 1:41) in the 113 championship match.
Felipe Gunter took fourth at 132 ( 12- 4 loss to Sheldon Bang of EL) and Max Mondonedo fell to Jacob Nichols of Nokomis (pin, 3:25) in the consolation finals at 285.
Those five wrestlers are scheduled to compete Saturday in state action at Windham.
“I was hoping for five or six to make it, but we’re still a young team and we have a lot coming back,” said Erick Jensen. “Overall, not a bad performance.”
Morse in Class B
Morse competed in the Western Maine Class B regional at York, which was won by Mountain Valley (164.50) over York (142) and Fryeburg Academy (141) with the Shipbuilders fifth with 121.5 points.
Morse brought 10 wrestlers south and eight advanced to the state meet, to be held at Fryeburg.
“ I don’t know what happened,” said Morse coach Shawn Guest with a chuckle. “It was just a good day for us. I was thinking five or six would great, never did I think eight would get in. And Corey Lint (third at 220) was just cleared by the doctor last Monday. He had been out since the Westlake Tournament with shoulder injury.”
Kyle Bonti won 106 with a 12- 6 decision over Nicole Burgess of Mountain Valley and Wyatt Brackett captured 145 with a 1-0 decision over Jake Thurston on Fryeburg.
Gary Stevens took second at 126, while Chad Bonti was second at 132. Dylan Harrington picked up a third at 120, while Michael Alvarez was fourth at 152 and Brody Losier fourth at 220.
Lisbon in Class C
Lisbon competed in the Western C regional at Bucksport.
Dirigo won with 194.50 points, followed by Bucksport (157.50), Winslow (122), Madison (100), Mt. View (82), Lisbon ( 73), George Stevens (38.5), Monmouth (23), Hall- Dale ( 15), Orono ( 14) and Spruce Mountain (10).
In the Lisbon effort, Zach Stevens pinned Alex Brown of Bucksport in 2:43 to win the 120-pound championship.
Also advancing to the state meet, to be held at Fryeburg, were Cody Brauneia (third at 106), Tyler Bard ( fourth at 126) and David Moore (fourth at 160).
