BRUNSWICK — Route 1 northbound near the Coastal Connector was closed for approximately an hour Friday night after a 36-year-old Brunswick man allegedly driving under the influence crashed a car police say he stole from his girlfriend.
David Lafave, 36, of 49 Franklin Parkway, was charged with theft by unauthorized use of property, operating under the influence, operating after license suspension and violating conditions of release following the incident, which occurred just after 8 p.m. Friday near the onramp to Route 196, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said today.
Lafave crashed a 2001 Mustang into jersey barriers along Route 1, causing airbags in the car to deploy, Hagan said.
Lafave was taken to Mid Coast Hospital with minor injuries. He “did not cooperate with (police) or medical staff,” Hagan said.
Police deemed the cause of the crash to be unsafe speed and operating under the influence. The vehicle sustained “disabling” front end damage.
Shortly before officers cleared the scene, police received a call from a 36-yearold woman — of the same Franklin Parkway address — who said her 2001 Mustang had been stolen, so officers charged Lafave with theft by unauthorized use of property. Hagan said it’s not clear from where the car was taken.
