While the temperatures are below freezing and a new fresh coat of snow is on the ground, the Morse and Mt. Ararat High School swim teams took to the pool Tuesday evening.

A lot of the athletes swim together in the Long Reach Swim Club, so there was a lot of cheering for both sides at the meet.
“It’s always fun swimming with these guys,” said Olivia Harper.
The Shipbuilder boys scored 115 points to Mt. Ararat’s 43, while the Morse girls won by the score of 99- 71.
“This was a good meet for us to go out and work on things,” said Mt. Ararat co-coach Steve Butts.

There were no school records set Tuesday, but each team got some important work in heading into the holiday break.
“This was a good meet for us. We were able to work on some of our times and get ready for the Morse Invitational next week,” said Morse coach Todd Marco.

Individually, the Morse swimmers were practically unbeatable. Taking a pair of events each were Ella Martin (200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) and Olivia Harper (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle).
“I just go out and do my best,” said Harper. “I’ve been working hard to get to this point.”
Delaney Young captured the 100 backstroke (1:15.24), while teammate Haily Harper took the 100 breaststroke (1:11.46), beating the second-place finisher by nearly 15 seconds. Emma Warner was tops in the 50 freestyle, edging Anderson.
Harbo was the lone individual event winner for Mt. Ararat, taking the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:52.21, a full 41 seconds better than Young.
The two teams split the final two relay races. The Eagles took the 400 freestyle relay, while the Morse girls took the 200 freestyle. Mt. Ararat’s 400 relay team of Madigan Saunders, Svetin, Harbo and Spelke won the event with a time of 4:11.18, over 11 seconds better than the Morse “A” team.
Olivia Harper, Warner, Anastasia Alaboudi and Haily Harper finished the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.82 for Morse.
“I can’t say enough about my relay team,” said Olivia Harper. “They have all improved this year and I think we’ll do well.”
Boys
The boys side was not as close as the girls, but still managed to have some competitive events.
In the team relays, the 200 medley squad from Morse of Evan Willertz, Dom Marco, Brandon Johnson and Braden Olsen finished first, besting the team from Mt. Ararat, Sam Wright, Devin Hoskins, Robert Hyde and Max Bickford by five seconds.
In the 200 freestyle, Olsen, Alex Gurney, and Evan and Ben Willertz placed first with a time of 1:43.04. And in the 400 freestyle relay, Ben Willertz, Brandon Johnson, Gurney and Marco completed the relay sweep with the top time of 3:43.84.
Marco, Johnson, and Evan and Ben Willertz each took home first in a couple of events. Marco was tops in the 200 individual medley (2:19.45) and the 100 freestyle (53.01).
“I’m feeling good right now,” said Dom Marco. “ Two practices a day, except for Saturday and Sundays and work hard every day.”
Johnson captured the 200 freestyle (2:09.41) and the 100 butterfly (1:05.20). Evan Willertz placed first in both the 500 freestyle ( 5: 23.45) and 100 breaststroke ( 1: 08.94). Ben Willertz took the 50 freestyle ( 24.24) and 100
backstroke (1:00.29).
Mt. Ararat ’ s Wright, Hoskins and Hyde all had strong showings for the home team. Wright placed second in the 200 individual medley, Hoskins was second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, while Hyde was runner-up in both the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle.
“These kids work really hard. This was a good tune-up for us before the break,” added Butts.
