FALMOUTH – Steve Linskey, of Falmouth, Maine, passed away May, 7 2021.

Steve grew up in South Portland where his youth was spent on the waterfront of Willard Beach and Fort Prebble. Steve graduated from South Portland High School as a stand out football player where he earned All State status for three years, and was a co-captain in 1961. Following graduation, he played three years for the Portland Seahawks, semi-pro football team.

Steve enlisted in the U.S. Army Aviation Corp. At the completion of boot camp and training in Ft. Benning, Georgia, Steve was recognized as the top recruit in his class. He went on to Ft. Rucker, Alabama, for flight engineer training. He then returned to Ft. Benning in the 11th Air Assault for more training. He joined the 18 Army Caribous across the Atlantic to Vietnam. He completed a long tour in Vietnam, and then was transferred to France. He flew throughout Europe, for another year, completing a three year enlistment. Throughout his service, Steve received many honors and was awarded numerous decorations, one of which was the Air Metal with 10 oak leaf clusters. Steve logged over 1,100 hours of combat flight time and a total of 2,600 hours while in the service.

Steve graduated from East Coast Aerotech in 1969, and then attended flight school at Hanscom Airfield in Massachusetts.

Steve enjoyed a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service (MVC), in Portland, Maine. He was the Motor Vehicle Craft Director for 27 years, and retired in the fall of 2002. Steve was a proud member of the American Legion, VFW, and DAV. Most importantly, he was an advocate for helping veterans receive the benefits they deserved.

Steve was very proud of his Irish heritage and his Maine roots. He loved nature, and enjoyed fishing, hunting and his time spent with his wife at their family camp on Pequawket Lake. Steve was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and enjoyed all sports. He was a member of the Western Maine board of football officials. He officiated high school and college football for over 32 years.

Steve loved caring for his property on Merrill Road. He spent hours gardening, cutting wood, finding excuses to ride his collection of tractors, and feeding the wildlife on his beautiful land. Steve and his wife Darlene enjoyed many trips to Ireland, and their own special spot in the Grenadines on Palm Island. It was the paradise they looked forward to every January. Steve believed that “Dreams are nothing more than wishes and a wish is just a dream wished to come true”. He always liked the life he was living and he lived the life he liked to the fullest.

Steve is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Linskey. They were inseparable during their years together. Darlene’s children and grandchildren have a special spot in Steve’s heart. Steve had three sisters, Marilyn, Eleanor and Laurel, and a brother, Bob. Steve had many nieces and nephews who looked up to him, as a favorite uncle. They fondly remember Uncle Steve with his well-groomed mustache and fragrant pipe, and maverick twinkle in his eye. Steve will be remembered as a dear friend and companion to those fortunate to have known him. He had a quick wit and sense of humor that served him well.

There will be a grave sight ceremony followed by a celebration of life on Monday, May 17, beginning at 2 p.m., at the Linskey Residence, 54 Merrill Road, Falmouth, Maine, 04105.
