SCARBOROUGH – John D. Roberts II, 70, of Scarborough, beloved husband of Christine Kukka, began a new journey on June 7, 2021, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, following a long illness with COVID-19 and cancer.

He was born Oct. 30, 1950, in Plainfield, N.J., the son of Jane Walters and John L. Roberts. John came to Maine to attend St. Francis College (now University of New England) and majored in math. He loved the area and stayed, working as a land surveyor which allowed him to use his math skills, help resolve property disputes, and enjoy the outdoors. He worked for the City of Biddeford and served as city planner for two years. He and wife Chris met when she was a reporter covering York County. They were together for 35 years and enjoyed many adventures and travels around the world. He left Biddeford to lead Land Use Consultants’ surveying division and served as right-of-way manager at the Maine Turnpike Authority for 20 years before retiring (“I finally took my parents’ advice and stopped playing in traffic,” he remarked.)

John served on Maine’s Board of Licensure for Professional Land Surveyors and enjoyed mentoring many men and women as they developed surveying skills. John loved his family, friends, music, and good food. Despite the challenges that life threw at him, he kept his sense of humor, kindness, and compassion, and would help anyone in need.

John leaves his wife, and daughters Molly Roberts of Scarborough, Jinqiu Roberts (Shawn Kelly) and daughter Lori Rae of Auburn, Morgan Rinakama (Peceli Rinakama) and son Joseph of Lynn, MA, and Tara Roberts of Lawrence, MA. He also leaves his sister, Carol Thompson (Don Thompson) of Castleton, VT, and two nephews and a niece.

A memorial service will be held from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, followed by a reception until 4 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home on Route 1 in Scarborough.
