While I realize that the 295 corridor from Portland to Brunswick has a seemingly disproportionate number of endless bridge and road repairs ongoing, there are countless reasons for giving road workers – and fellow drivers – a break. Literally. For one, my college-age son spent most of his summer at bridgework sites, and reckless drivers should not have been one of his concerns.
Uneven pavement, lined and unlined lane changes and heavy traffic are tricky enough to navigate for locals yet, again and again, I am sped up upon while traveling 55 in a 45-mph zone, only to be overtaken when they dash into the seemingly 70-mph left lane.
I get it, we are used to driving 70 mph on that whole stretch, but seriously folks, how many accidents a week do we read about in this corridor? There probably are 295 reasons to slow down, but only one for speeding through this stretch. So, unless people are taking someone to the hospital, with their emergency lights flashing, please give us all a break.
