Gladyce “Rose” (Sottolano)
Donagan
FREEPORT – (Gladyce) Rose Sottolano Donagan died under the loving care of Gosnell Memorial Hospice house on Nov. 4, 2025, after a brief illness.
Rose was born in Rumford on Dec. 20, 1948, to Samuel and Louise (Rhodes) Sottolano. Born into an Air Force family, they moved a lot (spending a memorable period in Germany), but Falmouth was always home. Rose graduated from Falmouth High School in 1967.
Throughout her career, Rose was employed initially at L.L.Bean before she found her passion for healthcare, and was then employed by Midcoast Hospital (Regional Memorial Hospital). She was also a long time member of the Freeport Rescue Department, as a volunteer EMT.
Rose was a mother of three daughters, Michelle Cleaves of Topsham, Tracey Donagan of Freeport, and Amanda Currier of Durham, who were the joy of her life. Being a mom was part of what Rose was destined for. Not only was she a mother to her three girls, Mama Rose, as she affectionately known, also welcomed any friend in need and was a mother figure to many. She was adored by her grandchildren, having been such a dependable presence in their lives. There was rarely a sporting or school event that she wasn’t there for.
As a single mother, it took her a little longer, but she graduated from Andover College at the age of 55, which with all reason, she was very proud of!
Rose was a creative soul and loved to share her creativity with anyone interested. Many would say if you ever saw Rose’s apartment, the entry way alone told the season or holiday.
Rose was very gracious and an amazing friend but even more an amazing mother and grandmother. Anyone who knew Rose was lucky to know such kindness.
Rose was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Louise (Rhodes) Sottolano; and three sisters, Janice, Sandy, and Bonnie.
She leaves behind her brother, James Sottolano and his wife Colleen; her three daughters; nine grandchildren whom she adored; several great-grandchildren; and many, many wonderful friends. Her absence has left a gaping hole in so many lives and she will be sorely missed.
There will be a memorial service held Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Falmouth Congregational church with light refreshments to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please consider adopting a local family this Christmas or donating to your local community center or food bank in her honor
