A South Portland bowling alley is getting ready to shut down its lanes.

Broadway Bowl will close May 17, the business announced on social media Friday.

“Running a business is a lot like bowling — there are fist-pumping strikes, stubborn splits, and yes, the occasional gutterball,” the business wrote. “The past few years have brought a little bit of everything. Like many small businesses we’ve been navigating a challenging and unpredictable economic moment, and not every roll has landed where we hoped.”

Owner Charlie Mitchell has described Broadway Bowl as the little sibling to his other alley, Bayside Bowl in Portland. Both put an emphasis on offering food, beverages and a place to hang out, catering to bowlers and nonbowlers alike.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the people we’ve met, the community we’ve been lucky enough to be part of, and all the memories made along the way,” the business said in its announcement. “South Portland, you’ve meant a lot to us.”

Located at 725 Broadway, Broadway Bowl opened in November 2023 on the site of the former Sea Dog Brewing Company pub and bowling alley, which had closed earlier that year.

In an interview on opening day, Mitchell said he hoped the South Portland location would give his longtime Portland employees a chance to grow “into bigger positions.”

Broadway Bowl staff will be “rolling over” to Bayside Bowl, according to Friday’s announcement.
