Bellville, an artisanal bakeshop specializing in laminated pastries and pizza, announced Monday plans to close its 1 North St. flagship after nine years.

Bellville owners Chris Deutsch and Amy Fuller said in an Instagram post that they don’t have enough trained bakers on staff to meet their quality standards and volume needs during high season. Their last day of service at North Street is Monday, June 8.

The post also stated that the owners have felt “financial strains” and have struggled with the logistics of keeping two locations running. They’re nearing the end of their 10-year-lease at North Street, and conceded that they’re feeling the burden of work as they age.

Bon Appétit in 2018 named Portland its Restaurant City of the Year, and called out Belleville specifically for its croissants, calling them “the best and butteriest” in the city.

Deutsch and Fuller said their location at 767 Forest Ave., which opened in 2023, will continue to be their wholesale operation hub, with retail hours Saturday and Sunday from 8-11 a.m.

“We plan to expand days, hours and offerings (at the Forest Avenue location) as soon as we settle into this new normal,” their post reads in part.
