Denial is a very results-oriented process — more negative than positive in my 80 years of life. Indifference is just as toxic.
So the saying “If I always do what I always did, I’ll always get what I always got” follows on for me.
Only 17% of the public trust the government to do what is right. Only 10% approve of how our Congress is handling its job. And 61% are dissatisfied with how democracy, as we thought we understood it, is functioning. And finally, 67% of Americans say the federal government is corrupt — not just one party but the whole enterprise.
Why do we reelect 90% of in-place politicians? In the 2024 general election, 95% of incumbents were reelected. Why?
A final question: our U.S. senators and representatives are our employees. We pay them a base income of $174,000 per year, plus perks we all dream of. Do we truly get the representation we deserve? Not according to the percentages listed.
Our collective denial and indifference erodes our souls and country. Surely you can feel it?
