Do I regret supporting Graham Platner? Do I wish Gov. Janet Mills had won the primary? Do I wish Platner had never made a run for the U.S. Senate in Maine? Not for a minute.
Platner has built a powder keg and he has lit the fuse. I know for a fact no one else —not Mills, say, nor Sara Gideon — could have inspired the grassroots movement Platner did.
What he has created will endure after he leaves. As flawed as he is as a human being, Platner is genuinely passionate about his beliefs. He communicated that passion to thousands of others, many of them new to politics, many others (like me) jaded by years of disappointment.
Because of those flaws, Platner has to step back and let others finish what he started. But others will carry on. We will finish what he started. We owe that much to him.
