I was recently traveling through Wiscasset when I was in a minor traffic incident. Our trailer clipped the bike rack on another vehicle, so we turned down a side street, off of the busy Route 1 traffic snarl that usually occurs at the intersection by Red’s Eats. 

As we parked and exited our cars, discussing a resolution to the situation, numerous people came out of their homes and yards along with, as this man announced himself, “the town manager,” approaching us very aggressively and telling us that we couldn’t park there and we needed to move.

We told him of the situation and explained that we would be done in a minute. He then walked away with the complaining locals and called the police. We never met with the local police; we had concluded our business and relocated. We saw the officer drive by after the fact.

The reason I am writing this letter is because I was very shocked at the attitude of the locals and the man identifying as town manager. One would think that a town that thrives on tourism and has repeatedly voted down plans to build a bypass that would reduce traffic jams (but reduce traffic through their town and shops) would be a little more friendly to tourists.
