This Friday is Tax Day, and the Post Office in Portland will be staying open late to serve people who wait until the last possible minute to file their returns.
On Friday, the customer service windows at the post offices at 125 Forest Ave. and 400 Congress St. in Portland will be staffed and open until 7 p.m. In addition, at the Forest Avenue location, the self-service lobby will be open until midnight, along with the automated postal center. The automated postal center allows customers using debit or credit cards to weigh packages and print postage for their large envelopes and parcels and then deposit those items into a secure drop box for shipping.
Tax returns dropped into the collection slot in the Forest Avenue Post Office lobby or into the roadside collection boxes on Forest Avenue and Portland Street will be collected and postmarked until midnight.
Volunteer members of the AARP will be on hand at the Forest Avenue location from noon until 4 p.m. to answer questions for those who may not have their tax returns completed. The AARP volunteers will assist with hard copy tax returns only; they will be unable to offer any electronic filing assistance.
The Portland post offices are the only ones in the area that will be open late Friday. All other post offices in the area will be keeping their normal business hours. In Westbrook, the post office will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. In Gorham, the office will be open from 8:45 a.m. until 5 p.m., and the Buxton post office will be open from 8:30 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
