Do you know older adults who have turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because they are concerned about falling or have cut down on favorite activities because they are afraid they might fall? If so, “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls” can help.

A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program developed by the Roybal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University. The program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults who have concerns about falls. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

Partnership for Healthy Aging will offer the following Matter of Balance courses. Each session lasts two hours; classes are held either twice a week for four weeks or once a week for eight weeks. The fee is $10, refreshments and a workbook are provided. Space is limited. The community is welcomed.

Courses will take place at Deering Pavilion, 880 Forest Ave., Portland, from 10 a.m. to noon, June 15 through July 8, Wednesdays and Fridays; The Atrium at Cedars, 640 Ocean Ave., Portland, from 10 a.m. to noon, from July 11 through Aug. 4, Mondays and Thursdays; and the Salvation Army, 297 Cumberland Ave., Portland, from 10 a.m. to noon, July 15 through Sept. 2, Fridays.
