Swimming
Coach: Laura Branch (fourth season)
Winter 2004-05 record: Girls were 5-5, third at the SSW championships; boys were 4-5.
Key veterans: Hannah Branch (junior, state champ in the 100-fly); Katie Caddle (sr.), Kate Higgins (jr.), Stephanie Pion (sr.), Kate Higgins (jr.), Kim Simonsen (sr.), Courtney Spencer (sr.), Mary Yarumian (sr.), Ian Crossman (jr.), Corey McGrath (jr.), Spencer Lord (soph.).
Key concern: “It’s always numbers. We didn’t have many of our boys returning this year.”
Coach’s outlook: “I want these kids to do the best they possibly can. My goal is to help them have fun and be able to compete. Last year they did awesome and I was very impressed. I like seeing the growth in the kids who haven’t had much experience. These kids have started something new and they have been successful at it. They are fun and they want to learn and that motivates me.”
Boys Basketball
Coach: Rick Simonds (third season)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 12-7
How did last season end: Lost to Deering in the first round of the post-season tournament.
Key veterans: Anthony Atkins, Mike Harmon, James Hanley, Scott Proudman.
Key newcomers: Casey McKague, Ben Delcourt.
Coach’s outlook: “We’re young, but we have the potential to be competitive. We’ll have more athletes than basketball players to start with. Our schedule is very difficult, with Gorham coming into the conference. We are going to miss Kyle McKague and Matt O’Donnell, in particular.
Girls Basketball
Coach: Mark Sawyer (first year)
Winter 2004-05 record: 6-12
Key veterans: Kelly Johnson, Jessica Nassetta, Heather Townsend, Lyndie Libby, Meagan Ledoux, Laura Bell.

Key concerns: New coach, learning a new system and a tough early season schedule (at South Portland, at Deering and McAuley.
Coach’s outlook: “I am very much looking forward to this year’s group. I believe that we have a good mixture of experience and youth and we have athletes that are going to get out and play. How we make it through the tough early schedule and how we mature through Christmas will be keys to our success, long term, throughout the year. Ultimately, our goal is to bring the Scots back to the tournament at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Girls Track
John Turrell (8th season)
Winter 2004-05 record: 7-3

Coach’s outlook: “Our senior division will be strong with all events solidly covered with some of the top athletes in the league. Our junior division will be made up mostly of freshmen who are still unknowns. This should be a fun and exciting season for us.
Boys Track
Greg Wilkinson
Winter 2004-05 Record: 5-8
Key veterans: Ben Roy, Evan Embrey, Eric Favreau, John Wiechman.
Key newcomers: Greg Gadbois (transfer hurdler from Portland).
Coach’s comment: “We had quite a few state qualifiers last season and we were competitive. We have 30 boys signed up this season. We normally only have 10 or 12 – and we have some very competitive young men. I think we’ll be a very good team. I think we can put together relays, hurdlers and middle distance and I think we’re as good as anybody, but Deering, Gorham, Scarborough and Edward Little should be our chief competition.”
Ice Hockey:
Coach: Dave Petterson (second season)
Winter 2004-05 Record: 5-13
Key veterans: Nate Jewell (junior forward), Kayle Hamilton (sophomore forward/defense).
Key newcomers: Travis Dunn (freshman forward)
Key concerns: “Our limited numbers are our biggest concern. Endurance in the third period cost us last season and will continue to be our biggest challenge this year.
Coach’s outlook: “With the revised scheduling, I think we’ll have more consistently competitive games this year. I think we’ll put a few more wins together this year and, because we have no seniors this year, we’ll lose no players next year.”
Wrestling
Coach: Brooks Clark
Winter 2004-05 Record: 16-4
How did last season end: Finished third in Class A state championships.
Key veterans: Seniors Jack Lovell (fourth in the state last year) and Cory Byrnes and Dan Avery, Max Dunzik, Jarred Stiles, Bobby Dedovic and Alex Truslow.
Coach’s comment: “We have 27 kids out, but only two seniors. We have 11 freshmen and about 10 juniors. We are young and inexperienced, losing eight senior starters. We have a very tough schedule, including three out-of-state tournaments. I expect we will show steady improvement if the young kids don’t get discouraged early.”
