Gorham’s boys track team picked up where it left off last winter.

The Rams, last season’s Class B indoor champions, began life in Class A with a regular season meet Saturday at the Expo that featured Portland, the defending Class A champs, and Gorham won handily.

With two victories each, Josh Maxwell (400 and intermediate 45), Brett Connolly (jr. 45 and jr. 600) and Justin Villacci (int. 40 and int. 300) led the charge. Isaac Pease (jr. 400), Duncan Allen (int. 600), Kyle Perkins (800) and Andy Nash (shot put) also won individual events for the Rams.

Coach John Wilkinson’s squad piled up 104 points, while Portland (63.5) took second and Thornton Academy (51.5) settled for third.

Westbrook’s boys had a strong showing in week one, collecting 79 points, topping Windham (34) but finishing behind Cheverus (94).

Erik Born was tops in three events, winning the high jump, 400 and sr. hurdles, while teammates Alex Baillargeon (800 and int. hurdles) and Robbie Preston (200 and int. 40) took two events each. John Davis (sr. 600), Zach Good (int. 300) and Patrick Herrick (mile) also crossed the tape first for the Blazes.

“We have small numbers,” said Baillargeon, “but we have a lot of strength and heart, and we’re really tight as a team.”

The senior, a four-year member of the track squad, feels that working out with Born has helped make him a better athlete.

“We compete on and off the field,” he said. “In practices we race each other. He’s a great training buddy.”

The boys from Bonny Eagle also had a good showing, with 71.5 points. Deering accumulated 87 points to take the meet, while Biddeford was third with 63.5.

Scots winners included Ben Roy (sr. 300, sr. hurdles), Joe Bailey (jr. 45), Eric Favreau (sr. 600) and Evan Embrey (mile).

Greg Gadbois, a senior who transferred to Bonny Eagle this year from Portland High School, finished second in both the 400 and the sr. hurdles. He’s enjoyed the switch to a more “peaceful” locale.

“When you’re running outside there’s so much scenery you can look at,” he said, “where in Portland its building after building.”

Gadbois, who lives in Buxton, said he’s settled in, but the transition wasn’t easy.

“It was so tough because I left all my friends behind. I’m kind of a shy kid, but once I started to know people it got easier.”

The Scots girls team had a decent day, winning several events and collecting 84 points. Deering took first easily with 144.5 points, while Biddeford totaled 63.5.

Individual winners for Bonny Eagle included Kelly Martin (jr. 400), Britney Doyon (jr. hurdles), Katlyn Gardiner (sr. hurdles), Courtney Wallace (sr. shot put) and Amber Cronin (high jump).

Thornton Academy’s powerhouse girls team (113 points) won its meet against Gorham (58) and Portland (28). Alyson Fearon (jr. 40) and Sarah Popovics (sr. 800) won individual events for the Lady Rams.

Jill Bernier (sr. shot put) was the sole individual winner for the Lady Blazes, as they collected 30 points to finish behind Windham (88) and Cheverus (74).

EmJay Williams finished second in both the sr. 40 and sr. 200, while Natashia Langway was second in the jr. shot put and third in the jr. 400.

All of the teams will be in action again Saturday at the Expo.
