Spring is the traditional time for sheep shearing in Maine. Ewes have had their lambs and shepherds are preparing their flocks for the pasture season.

A hands-on sheep shearing school is planned for Saturday, March 25 at Sun Rise Acres located at 42 Winn Road in Cumberland. The course fee is $20.00 per participant and includes lunch. The shearing school will be presented from 8:00 a.m. until the early afternoon. The public is invited to watch sheep being shorn, there is no charge to watch.

Participants should be in good physical health as shearing sheep takes leg, back and upper body strength.

David Averill and Richard Brzozowski will be the lead teachers. Joan Rolfe of the Maine Sheep Breeders Association will demonstrate table shearing, proper wool handling and the procedure for skirting raw wool.

The shearing school is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Sheep Breeders Association.
