It was announced this week that the ninth annual TD Banknorth Beach to Beacon 10K will take place on Saturday, Aug. 5. The Cape Elizabeth race, which has established itself as one of Maine’s premier sporting events and one of the most popular events on the U.S. road race circuit, draws a field of 5,000 runners from throughout the region and the world to the small coastal community. More than $50,000 in prize money is awarded to the Beach to Beacon’s top finishers and place winners in the various categories for men and women. The event also features a children’s 1K race with 500 kids participating. For more information, visit www.beach2beacon.org. Online registration will begin in mid-March and usually fills by late May. The beneficiary for this year’s race will be the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that enriches learning for Cape youth by funding innovative projects that fall outside of the school budget.

Flag raising

The Bonny Eagle Middle School honor flag was raised to celebrate the Scots’ eighth grade basketball team, which won the Pepsi Invitational Basketball Tournament Championship at St. Joseph’s College on Feb. 4. This is the first BEMS team to take home the trophy. Rams keep running

USM freshman Jimmy Sawyer won the 400 at the Maine Men’s State Championship at Costello Fieldhouse on Feb. 4. The Gorham High graduate was also runner-up in the 200, missing another victory by just 2/100 of a second. Teammate Elton Savery, who was also part of last year’s state championship Rams track squad, was fifth in the hurdles and seventh in the triple jump. On Monday the pair also competed in the New England Alliance championship meet, also held at USM. Sawyer took third in that 200 and second in the 400, while Savery was again fifth in the hurdles.

On the court and in the classroom

Bentley junior forward Jeff Holmes was named to the Northeast-10 Conference all-academic team on Thursday. The Westbrook native currently leads his league in offensive rebounds, while averaging 13 points per game. The Falcons extended their winning streak to 12 games Saturday with a 77-61 win over Southern New Hampshire University. Holmes had nine points and nine rebounds in the contest.

Youth lacrosse clinics

The Gorham Sports Center will host lacrosse clinics for boys and girls during school vacation week. The Freeze Out Lacrosse Clinic for boys at the middle school and youth level will be held on Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $25. On the same day, HotShotz Lacrosse will hold a clinic from noon to 2 p.m. for girls who have never played the game or are just learning. It’s open to youth, middle school and high school players. The cost is $10. Sticks will be available to those girls that do not have their own. Please call ahead to reserve a stick. Both clinics are being held at the Gorham Sports Center. Westbrook baseball clinic for middle schoolers

Westbrook High School’s baseball coaching staff, with the assistance of several varsity players, will hold clinics for middle school students on all baseball skills. Indoor lacrosse in Gorham

Gorham Sports Center is now accepting pre-registrations for the last session of high school lacrosse for boys and girls. The five-week session held on Wednesdays will be a team/league format with a set game schedule. Pre-registering is strongly encouraged, as payment will be required to reserve either a team slot or an individual player slot on a first-come, first-served basis. The girls play later in the afternoon and early evening with boys playing later in the evening. The deadline for pre-registering is Friday, Feb. 17, with league play beginning on Feb. 22. Get the jump on spring sports

The University of Southern Maine baseball staff will hold pitching, hitting and defense clinics on consecutive Sundays, Mar. 5 and 12, at the Costello Fieldhouse on the school’s Gorham campus. The clinics are open to players ages 8 to 18, with pitching and defense the focus from 9 a.m. to noon and hitting from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost for each session is $30, while a full day is $50.
