Wolfpack on the prowl
Twenty members of the Westbrook Wolfpack program competed in Saturday’s Maine Pee-Wee Wrestling Championships at Noble High School, and 14 placed among the top four in their weight class. Ryan Lund and Andrew Reardon both won state titles, while Jesse Dibiase, Tylor Work, DJ Breunig, Michael Cleveland, Christian Coons, Marty Rioux-Pena and Iain Whitis were runners-up. The Wolfpack is sending 15 members to wrestle at the New England meet Saturday at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Murphy among tops in New England
Sean Murphy finished fifth in his division at the Elks New England Hoop Shoot Contest in Nashua, NH, Saturday. Representing Portland Elks Lodge 188, the Westbrook sharpshooter won the local, regional and state competitions among 12-13 year olds in recent weeks. At New Englands, Murphy faced off against some tough opponents, with all six athletes finishing within five shots of each other. “Sean did the Elks and the State of Maine proud as our representative,” said Bruce Jordan of Lodge 188.
SMAA swimming all-stars
Westbrook’s Matt Violette was named as a first-team SMAA boys swimming all-star in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Teammate Jake Wilson was named to the third team in the 200 IM. Both Violette and Wilson were named to the second team in the 400 freestyle relay. Bonny Eagle’s Hannah Branch was named as a first-team girls all-star in the 100 butterfly and 200 medley relay, and second team in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle relay. The Scots Mary Yarumian was named as a league academic all-star.
