Meet the GOP candidates
Former State Sen. Ron Usher will interview two Republican gubernatorial candidates this week in his regular monthly televised program.
Usher will talk with Chandler Woodcock of Farmington and Peter Mills of Cornville. Both are seeking their party’s nomination in the June primary for governor. The program, “Legislative Update,” will be aired live on local cable TV3 at 7 p.m. on Thursday from room 114 in Westbrook High School.
The program will be taped and replayed on Saturday and Sunday, Usher said.
Tenney in culinary demo
Brandon Tenney, a former culinary arts student at Westbrook Regional Vocational Center, returned from college last week to give a demonstration.
Tenney is a student at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., a four-year school. “I love it there, it’s the best school,” Tenney said.
He is the son of Craig Tenney of Scarborough and Kimberly Burnham of Windham. Tenney graduated from Windham High School in 2005.
He created a sautA?© chicken with finis sauce, potato gratin and maple glazed carrots. “I’m doing a demo for all the kids in this class,” said Tenney, who was home in Maine visiting last week.
As part of an internship, Tenney landed a job at TV chef Bobby Flay’s restaurant in New York. Tenney, who applied and interviewed for the job, will be working at the restaurant for 18 weeks, beginning Monday, April 10, in Manhattan, where Tenney has an apartment. “I’m taking a quick vacation before going off to work,” Tenney said, as he prepared his demonstration. “I’m so excited that I can’t wait. This will be the best experience possible.”
Tenney plans to travel to Paris, France, and around the United States. Then, he hopes to own a restaurant.
Norman Sprague, director of the culinary arts program at WRVC, said Tenney is a good student. “I knew he was going to make it,” said Sprague, who taught Tenney as a student for two years.
Sprague hopes to visit Tenney at the New York restaurant this summer.
The culinary arts dining room at WRVC is open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For lunch reservations, call Sprague at 854-0820.

Iron cross photo wanted
Suzan Norton of the Westbrook Historical Society is hoping that someone has a photo of the “old black iron” crosses that once marked graves at St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery.
She said that the crosses, which were numbered, were given for scrap during World War II. She said they marked the graves of about 300 people.
Norton said the historical society has the history of St. Hyacinth’s written by Phil LaViolet. However, she said the history doesn’t have a photo of the crosses.
The Westbrook Historical Society can be contacted at 854-5588.
