How did last season end: Western Maine Conference Champions and Class B state champions

Key players: Key returning athletes: Max Bass (javelin), Ryan Dyer (distance and racewalk), Brian Keahon (discus), Josh Maxwell (hurdles and jumps), Andrew Nash (shot put and discus), Kyle Perkins (pole vault), Matt Trask (relays and jumps), Peter Vandekrol (discus) and Joe Wise (sprints and relays). New athletes expected to make a contribution: Colby Walker (jumps and javelin), Jeff Manchester (jumps and javelin), Adam Kidder (shot put and discus), Jimmy Arcaro (sprints and relays) and Kyle Brown (hurdles and jumps).

Season outlook: “Numerous contributors from last year’s successful squad were lost to graduation, so the Rams are looking for some new faces to step up and fill these holes. The numbers are looking good and so far the weather has cooperated, so all of us ‘trackletes’ are looking forward to the spring!”

Girls Track

Coach: John Caterina (13th year)

Last season’s record: 11-3, second in Western Maine Conference, third in state Class B meet

How did last season end: Third in Class B.

Key players: Seniors Kathryn Cyr (jumps and 400), Johannah O’Malley (distance) Kristi Hall (racewalk); and Sarah Popovics (distance); juniors Katie Bola (pole vault) and Chanelle Hallsworth (mid-distance); sophomores Leigh Maniscalco (hurdles, jumps, pole vault), Corey Perkins (pole vault), Alyson Fearon (sprints), Brittini Herring (sprints), Samantha Owens (jumps), Nicole Johns (throws) and Liz Demski (racewalk).

Season outlook: “There are approximately 35 girls for Gorham’s first spring season in Class A and the SMAA. The Rams should be very competitive with the majority of the league. They may not have the numbers and the depth to challenge traditional Class A powers like Thornton Academy and Scarborough.”

Baseball

Coach : Rocky Myers (15th year)

Last season’s record: 20-0

How did last season end: Class B state champs

Key players: Seniors 1B/P Mark Schmidt, 3B/P Sam Sturgis, SS Scott MacDonald and RF/P Craig Woodbrey; juniors 3B/P Justin Grandmaison and C John Mitchell.

Season outlook: “Defense and speed should be our strength. Catching and hitting need to improve.”

Softball

Coach: Pete Walker (11th year)

Last season’s record: 15-5, Western Maine Class B champs

How did last season end: Lost in state championship game

Key players: Junior P Tammie Arsenault, 13-4 last year with a 1.82 ERA & a WMC first-team all-star; senior C Melissa Sanborn, number-three hitter, who batted .330 and was also a WMC first-team all-star; senior RF Anna Willis, lead-off hitter and WMC honorable mention; Caitlyn Butterfield will move from SS to 3B replacing all-conference Courtney Lapierre. She’ll be looked upon for infield leadership, being the only returning infield starter. Seniors Maura Brady and Devon Racine will handle 1B; freshman Rachele Burns looks to take over at SS; senior Alison Fiebel will be in CF; Sophomores Monique King and Chantel Tijssen look to be key players in the outfield. Junior Darcy Racine and freshmen Luci Pike and Sara Burnheimer are competing for the starting 2B job; Bri Verrill and Krista Keene will give us depth off the bench. Sophomore Hilary Webster, OF, and freshman P Kelsey Crowe traveled with the team to Rhode Island recently and should see action this year.

Season outlook: “We should be able to compete in class A. Willis, Fiebel, Burns, King and Butterfield will replace the lost speed of graduates Lapierre, Shannon Martin and Ashley Wood. Pitching and catching will be strong point. Our goal is to make the playoffs, host a first-round game and see where it leads to from there. We are also excited that our home field, Robie Park, which had work done on the infield, bringing it back up to very good place to play softball. Thanks to AD Gerry Durgin, Pete Gleason and Rec. Director Cindy Hazelton for making it happen.”

Boys Lacrosse

Coach: Ken Templeton (2nd year)

Last season’s record: 7-6

How did last season end: Lost in the first round of the playoffs to Scarborough, 7-3.

Key players: Brendan Ryan, attack; Chad Henry, midfield; Tim Millett, midfield; Brian Plowman, goalie; Joe Martin, defense; Cam Fecteau, midfield.

Season outlook: “We have many returning players this year, so we are hoping to build on the success we enjoyed last season. Pre-season contests indicate that we have a fast, athletic team that will look to push the tempo in our games. Switching into the SMAA will present many challenges for us, but we will be a competitive team.”

Girls Lacrosse

Coach: Sarah Dolley (2nd year)

Last season’s record: “Since we had a challenging season as a first-year varsity program, we did not win a game. We did however give some of our opponents a tough match and tied a game with an experienced team as well.”

How did last season end: “We continued to improve throughout the season. Each game we learned something new. We are looking to have another season of growth, fun and strong competition.”

Key players: Attackers Kayla Nielsen and Ashley Michaud; midfielders Molly Folan and Amy Hodgkins; defenders Megan Douglass and Jacqui Lara.

Season outlook: “We have a really dedicated and positive group of girls this season who are looking forward to the competition in Class A. I am predicting a lot of growth and improvement again through out this season. These girls have great attitudes and a tremendous work ethic. We are raising the bar another notch this year!”

Boys Tennis

Coach: Viet Ly (2nd year)

Last season’s record: 6-6

How did last season end: Lost to Falmouth in the first round

Key players: Shaun Allen, Mike Ryan, Caleb Berry, Aaron Bergeron, Isaac Pease and Andrew Arena

Season outlook: “We’re looking forward to competing in Class A and to playing new teams. We’ve got four returning players from last year’s team, which made it to the first round.”

Girls Tennis

Coach : Sonja Frey (20th year)

Last season’s record: 5-7 and 1-1 in the tournament

How did last season end: Lost to Falmouth, the eventual winner, in the second round.

Key players: All three of our singles players are back: junior Kelsey Wilson, sophomores Kate Bowring and Libby Johnston. We

have a strong freshman, Brittany Raymond. Our other returning varsity players are Sally Patterson, Molly Stelmack, Charlotte Stuart, Bethany Straw and Amanda Sawyer.

Season outlook: “There are 35 out for the Gorham girls tennis team. We have some good new players and several returning juniors and seniors rounding out the team. We have a big group of sophomores and freshmen, which bodes well for the future. We should do well in Class A, and I am hoping to figure in the state tournament.”
