Saturday’s girls lacrosse game was a sandwich, with a thick slice of Scarborough offense on either side of a solid middle stretch from Bonny Eagle.

In the end the appetite of the Red Storm’s Lauren Hagerman was just too difficult to contain, as the senior attacker scored five goals, including three in a two-minute span of the second half that put the game away for the visitors, 8-4.

“There were a lot of poor passes and they were overthrowing the ball,” Scarborough coach Marcia Wood said of her players. “I tried to bring them back at halftime and during a time out to just relax.”

Indeed, Hagerman admitted that her team was nervous in the early stages of their season opener, but before long the Storm got into an offensive groove. Lizzy Houle opened the scoring 10 minutes in, followed quickly by scores from Hagerman and Brittany White.

When Hagerman effortlessly dumped her second goal over the head of Scots goalkeeper Meghan Ledoux just 30 seconds later, it looked like a double-digit victory was in the making for Scarborough.

And then everything changed.

“We talked and said we need stronger defense,” said Bonny Eagle’s Stephanie Bush, “and we need to get open more, and so we came back strong.”

The Scots looked like a different team, keeping the ball in their opponents’ end and getting shots on Storm goalkeeper Jessica Bolton.

With 13 seconds to go in the half, Bush put in the hosts’ first goal. Seconds later, Houle netted her second to give Scarborough a 5-1 margin at the break.

Bonny Eagle picked up where they left off when the second half began. Bush scored her second goal less than two minutes in. Ten minutes later Jamie Ketch took a high pass from Emily Harvey and flipped it in, and five minutes after that Bush made it a one-goal game with her third score.

The Scots hung on to the momentum for a solid 25-minute stretch, but a good bit of that was while Hagerman sat after receiving a yellow card. The offensive dynamo came back well rested and struck for a trio of scores that ended Bonny Eagle’s hopes of a comeback.

“Lauren is a four-year starter. She is one of a couple who can run the attack, but Lauren is one of the stronger players,” Wood said. “She sees the field well and her teammates have confidence in her.”

Despite giving up some goals, Scots coach Judith Martin said that Ledoux played “awesome.” The sophomore had 11 saves.

“In the first half our passes were off,” Martin added. “We couldn’t make the transition in the field. We were loading one side of the field, not making cuts. Once we made our cuts we did much better.”

“We just fell apart a few times when it was one on one and we didn’t transition back on defense,” said Ledoux, “but we’ll work on it.”

Bonny Eagle will be looking for their first wins this week, with four games scheduled.
