Westbrook Music Director Scott Trach has announced he will resign at the end of this school year, citing personal reasons for leaving after two years as head of music for Westbrook schools.
Trach said his extended family has gone through significant changes in the last two years and, as a result, he will consider other options for work next year. He told his music students last week and sent a letter on Westbrook Music Department letterhead to their parents on May 9.
“It’s basically a family decision,” Trach said in a later interview, saying that he and his wife as professionals were having a difficult time dealing with a 2-year-old daughter as well as the death of Trach’s father in the last two years and his mother’s bout with cancer last fall.
“Life has been crazy,” he said. “We decided I was going to look into doing something else next year.”
Trach said he will finish up the year, which practically speaking ends a week or two after school is out although his contract goes through August like all teachers’ contracts.
School Superintendent Stan Sawyer was appreciative of Trach’s time in Westbrook and what he did for the music program. “He took a comprehensive look at the entire program, allocating resources to the entire department in an equitable way,” he said. “He is very much a gentleman and very knowledgeable about music.”
During his tenure, Trach managed to attract jazz trumpet legend Toru “Tiger” Okoshi from the Berklee College of Music to play with the jazz ensemble as well as other talented musicians. His tenure also saw the elimination of the high school marching band.
