In one of the most exciting games of the year, the Westbrook Eagles defeated Kiwanis 4-3 to take sole possession of first place.
In the battle of the two top teams, the Eagles jumped on the board early scoring all four of their runs in the top of the third inning. Dylan Dale started the inning with a base hit to right field. After Joe Quinlan reached on an error, Paul Patrotti, Matt Moody and Craig Dibiase all singled off of Jake Limanni to complete the scoring.
Kiwanis answered back in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own behind a long double by Ryan Lebel and a base hit by Arron Duncanson. It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth, when Kiwanis closed the gap to 4-3 on hits by Duncanson and Limanni.
With the tying run in scoring position, Matt Moody challenged Joe Dvilinsky, who hit a long fly ball to center field that sent center fielder Magnes Lewis back to the warning track. Lewis made a sensational catch as he jumped up and robbed Dvilinsky of a game-winning home run.
Moody and Dibiase were repeat hitters for the Eagles, while Duncanson had two hits for Kiwanis.
The Eagles also defeated Phoenix Welding 6-3 in another close contest. The Eagles scored twice in the first, fourth and fifth innings on their way to their 10th straight win.
Repeat hitters were Joe Quinlan and Adam Begos, while Kyle Heath and Mike LaCourse had back to back dougles for the Phoenix.
Kiwanis was locked in another one-run game this week, but this time they came out on top as they edged Tickets Unlimited 3-2.
Mike Pena threw a complete game three-hitter while striking out 12 batters. The big hit was a three-run homer by Joe Dvilinsky that proved to be the difference in the game.
Blake Toth, Andrew McCarthy, Jeremiah Steele, and Pena had the only hits for Tickets.
In their second game, Tickets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Phoenix Welding, but once again could not hold onto a lead.
Kyle Borassa settled down for Phoenix and struck out six out of the next nine outs recorded. Derek Bouchard came in to relieve Brandon Steele and did a great job holding Phoenix to only three hits and two runs for the rest of the game. The final of the game was 10-3, Phoenix Welding.
Sappi continued to climb up the standings, riding a five-game win streak before being stopped by the Dairy Queen 4-3. Sappi began the week by winning a very close game over Prompto 5-4. Trevor Bates led the way with three doubles and two RBIs. Keenan Lowe had two hits as well. Bates and Jim Beahm combined for 16 strikeouts.
In another close game, Sappi defeated the Lions 9-7 behind the pitching of Cam McLain who picked up his first win. Keenan Lowe led the way offensively with two hits and Marty McInnis had a line drive single as well.
In their final game of the week, Sappi lost to the Dairy Queen 4-3 as the ice cream team reversed an earlier loss. For DQ, it was the second win of the week as they also handled the Lions 4-2.
Action continues five nights a week at the Joseph Warren Complex with games beginning at 5:30 pm.
