The Westbrook Eagles defeated Kiwanis, 2-1, on a hot and humid Sunday to move within one game of the city championship. A large crowd was on hand to see the top two teams in Little League battle it out in the winners’ bracket.
Kiwanis jumped on top early with back-to-back doubles by Jake Limanni and Joe Dvilinski in the first inning. The Eagles tied it up in the bottom of the first when Adam Begos singled home Joe Quinlan.
The game stayed that way until the last of the sixth, when the Eagles sent two men to the plate to win it. Matt Moody singled to open the inning and stole second base. Adam Begos promptly lined a single to right field scoring Moody with the winning run.
Begos led the Eagles with three hits, while Jake Limanni had two for Kiwanis. Paul Patrotti picked up the win for the Eagles, throwing three shutout innings.
In the other playoff game Sunday, it was Sappi defeating Phoenix Welding. 5-1. Jim Beahm and Trevor Bates combined for a one hitter against a potent Phoenix offense. Offensively, Sappi was led by Bates, with two home runs and all five RBIs. Cameron McLain chipped in with three hits and Keenan Lowe added two.
Earlier in the week in the winners’ bracket, Kiwanis defeated Tickets, 5-2. Zack Bean and Dvilinsky each pitched three strong innings for Kiwanis. Offensively, Limanni led the way with three hits. The big blow may have been the two-run single by Jake Levesque in the fifth inning to seal the victory.
In the other winners’ bracket game, the Eagles defeated Sappi. 13-3. behind Matt Moody’s three hits.
The double-elimination playoffs continue this week with the finals on Thursday night at 5:30 between the Eagles and the winner of the Kiwanis/Sappi game on Tuesday. The “if”-game would be played on Saturday.
