The Gorham Town Council was to consider on Tuesday, July 11, whether the town should ask the school department to hand over the Little Falls School on Acorn Street.
Town Councilor Matt Robinson sponsored the proposal, but action on the measure came after the American Journal’s deadline.
The 50-year-old Little Falls School, a former kindergarten, was last used as a school when it temporarily housed the sixth grade in the fall of 2003 before the new middle school opened. Now, it is being used for school department storage and for a before-and-after-school care program operated by Gorham Recreation Department. The town also utilizes the building as a polling place for District 1.
Town Manager David Cole said the town pays for heat and lights in the former school. But Cole said by law the school department still has control of the school.
There are several options available for future use of the building. It could continue to be used for the existing recreation programs or perhaps renovated to replace the South Windham fire station that Gorham shares with Windham.
Selling the building could also be an option. “The building isn’t in bad shape,” Cole said.
Little Falls School will be served by the new sewer line slated to be constructed this fall along Mosher Road to Westbrook.
Little Falls School replaced the Fred Robie School in the mid 1950s.
Town clock repair in works
The town council was also to consider awarding a contract to Balzer Clock Company of Freeport to repair the town clock.
The clock, which is located in the tower at the First Parish Church, stopped running in recent months. In June, the town council authorized spending $35,000 from a special clock reserve account to restore the clock works.
The council hasn’t decided on a future location for the clock. The clock has been in the church since 1868 when Toppan Robie gave it to the town.
