Led by No. 1 player David Gushee, Gorham defeated Bonny Eagle 11 A?1?2 to 1 A?1?2 Tuesday at the Gorham Country Club.

Gushee – who narrowly missed an eagle on the final hole – defeated Bonny Eagle’s No. 1, senior Ethan Rouse, by a match-play score of three and two. Gushee shot a nine-hole score of 34 to Rouse’s 42.

“I played solid all around,” Gushee said. “I didn’t get into too much trouble.”

Rouse didn’t expect to beat the Gorham sophomore coming into the match.

“He’s an amazing player,” Rouse said. “The only way you’re going to beat him is if he has an off day and you have a great day.”

Despite the win, Gorham coach Rocky Meyers had mixed emotions when discussing his team.

“I still don’t think we’re playing our best golf yet,” he said. “In some ways it is a little reassuring, knowing we are 2-0 when we haven’t played our best golf. It’s also a drag; we haven’t played our best golf, we’ve won two, and now we have to go to an away course.”

In the other matches, Gorham’s Dan Chadwick (42) defeated Curran McGarry (46), Ian Ryan (41) defeated Bonny Eagle’s Brian Moskevich (46) and Kayle Hamilton (44) defeated Gorham’s Andrew Dean (46). Also, Garrett King (44) defeated Tyler Farrell (50) and Noah McVane (46) defeated Bonny Eagle’s Jonathan Cappi (47).

“They are a good team,” said Bonny Eagle coach John Gubelman. “We came to their home course and it’s a huge advantage for them. We just want to try and be competitive with them and I think a couple of the matches were pretty competitive.”

Gorham (2-0) opened the season with a win over Biddeford (1-1) and faces Thornton Academy (2-0) today in Saco.

Bonny Eagle (1-1) is at home today against Biddeford.
