Eagles soar over Scots

3 min read

The Windham soccer team is showing signs of improvement as they rolled past Bonny Eagle, 4-1, Tuesday.

Josh Young scored all four goals for the Eagles to lead them to their second win of the season.

“I just did what I had to do for the team,” said Young.

Young’s first goal came just over three minutes into the game when he scooted in behind the Scots defenders and and took a shot that beat goaltender Jesse Doehler.

In soccer, especially at the high school level, scoring first is important. “I think 75 percent of the teams who win, score first,” said Eagles coach Jim O’Connor.

Young’s second goal came off a pass from Dylan O’Connor and ricocheted off Doehler’s hands and into the net.

“I think in the critical moments they were better. They were one step ahead of us,” said Scots head coach Jeff Neal.

Windham’s players were on the same page and it showed. They were all barking orders to each other and calling out instructions to one another. Coach O’Connor barely said a word during the game.

“This team is much closer than last year’s team,” said O’Connor. “They work hard and listen well.”

Young’s third goal came from a pass by Eric Walton as he drove the shot past the diving goalkeeper.

“Eric Walton helped me out a lot making those runs and putting it in the middle,” said Young.

The two would hook up again in the second half for Young’s fourth goal of the night. Walton sent the ball into the box from the corner and Young chipped it toward the net while streaking through the box.

The four goals gives Young six goals so far this season. O’Connor likes what he sees in the combination of Young and Walton.

“He’s finally got his best buddy Eric Walton up front with him. I think Eric had two assists. They’re a good combination,” said O’Connor.

With the win Windham improves to 2-1-1. They face a tough test from Gorham with Scarborough coming up.

The Scots struggled to find the net all evening. They were able to generate shots on goal but were unable to get more than one goal. Neal is happy to see the amount of shots up, but wants more.

“It’s something we’ve been working on. We’ve just got to find the net,” he says.

The one goal they did score came midway through the first half as Nate Jewell sent the ball toward the net from the corner. Khamla Mickelson came flying through the box to kick a one timer into the net. The goal cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

Bonny Eagle had several opportunities with corner kicks and a penalty kick but were unable to score. Shots would either be wide or long or the goalkeeper would make a play to stop the ball.

“We put the ball in some dangerous positions,” Neal said. “But we’re not finishing.”

Bonny Eagle drops to 1-2-1 and will play Kennebunk next.

“We’ve got to bounce back from this, we’ve got to put consistent minutes together,” Neal says. “If we can do that and start making that happen then I feel really optimistic for the season.”
