In Fall Baseball at Haverty Field, Westbrook and Portland each won a game on Sunday.
In the first game, Portland prevailed 9-4. Westbrook scored four runs in the top of the first. Portland came up with three of their own in the bottom of the first, then added five more over the next three innings.
Westbrook’s lone repeat hitter was Shawn McAlpine. Christian Hamilton had 2 RBIs. Stephen LeBel had one RBI as well as a long triple to deep left field.
The second game proved to be very exciting for the boys from Westbrook. They were trailing 4 -0 when they scored five runs in the last inning to salvage a 5-4 victory.
Tayler Clouatre led off the last inning by getting hit by a pitch. Mike Haskell and Bryan Crouse walked. The bases were loaded for Mike Anthony, who was also hit by a pitch to force in the first run.
Josh Harriman drove in Mike Haskell on a fielder’s choice, with Anthony forced out at second. Joey Cook drew an all-important walk to reload the bases for McAlpine, who knocked in two runs with a sharp single off the second baseman’s glove. Crouse and Harriman scored to tie the score at 4-4, while Cook advanced to third and McAlpine went to second.
Portland’s pitcher faked a throw to second to get McAlpine then turned to get Cook in a rundown from third. Cook stayed in the rundown long enough to allow McAlpine to advance to third.
With Eric Anderson at the plate, the Portland pitcher threw a wild pitch and McAlpine waltzed home with the winning run.
McAlpine again with two hits and 2 RBIs. Anthony and winning pitcher Harriman each had an RBI.
Westbrook goes into next week’s doubleheader against Cheverus with a 3-1 record. The games will be played Sunday, Sept. 24 at Haverty Field. The first game starts at 10 a.m.
