An impressive performance by their No. 1 player, David Gushee, and some wins sprinkled around the squad, fueled Gorham to a 9 A?1?2 to 3 A?1?2 victory against Windham, Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Point Sebago Golf Resort.

Even though the Eagles (0-4) were playing their home course, the visitors were able to take advantage of a young Eagles team.

Four of Windham’s top six golfers are freshmen, including Richard Getchell, who in his first match as No.1, shot a nine-hole score of 49 to Gushee’s score of 41. Getchell held his own but also lost match play four to two.

“Coming into the match I had heard a lot about him,” said Getchell “I had a strong short game but he is a real good player.”

Getchell admitted to being a little nervous at first but he felt comfortable “at the second tee.” He also felt like he saved his round on hole eight when he hit a 15-yard sand shot to within three inches of the cup.

The Eagles’ usual No. 1, Sam LeBlanc, was out due to an injury but the team rallied to score their most points this season.

Cameron Audet (49) defeated Garret King (50) of Gorham to score one point and the pair tied on match play which awarded both competitors with half a point.

“It was a close match,” said Audet “But I was putting more consistently than usual.”

Windham’s other two points came from another freshman, Don Hegarty. He shot a 49 but his opponent, Jack Tibbetts, did not finish due to illness.

In the other matches, the Rams’ Scott Guimond (40) defeated A.J. Olsen (66), Ian Ryan (47) defeated Windham’s Ryan McCarthy (56), and Gorham’s Craig Belhumeur (43) defeated Erik Lowell (64).

Gorham (3-1) showed why they are one of the best teams in the state by rebounding from their previous match, in which they lost at Thornton Academy 9A?1?2 to 3A?1?2.

“They are a very deep and talented team,” said Getchell.
