Westbrook Republicans nominated William L. Clarke for a 19th term as city clerk and Robert Hale Smith, 22, for mayor.
A petition opposes plans for Gorham to buy and demolish the 19th- century Masonic Building at the Village Square. Petitioners argue that such a plan wouldn’t solve Gorham traffic problems.
Because Linda Lampron is a teachers’ aide at Westbrook’s Child Care Center at the high school, by state law, her husband Lewis Lampron can’t run for the Westbrook School Committee. He had been proposed by William B. O’Gara to be the Democratic candidate.
It’s proposed that Windham Junior High School, now Grades 7, 8 and 9, become Windham Middle School, Grades 6, 7 and 8.
Cole-Layer-Trumble Co. new valuations of Westbrook property set higher values for Deer Hill. Owners are protesting to Mayor Fred Wescott, but the C-L-T appraisers have left town.
At St. Hyacinth Church, Westbrook, plywood was ripped off and eight windows were broken during the night.
Westbrook’s Anthony Amico, 12, has been named Outstanding Sportsman among Maine’s Little Leaguers. He’s the son of Glenn and Patricia Amico, Lyman Street. He played this summer for the Westbrook Eagles.
William Michaud, principal of Westbrook High School, told the Westbrppl School Committee that students “don’t take seriously” the Maine Educational Assessment test in the 11th grade.
Nancy Curran, 222 Duck Pond Road, is a candidate for re-election to the Westbrook School Committee.
Mark Benware, a Gorham High School junior, has won an all-expense-paid trip to a 4-H meeting in Chicago. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Stanley L. Benware, Spiller Road.
David McCain of the Windham Town Council will speak at the Maine Municipal Association’s annual meeting on his innovative approach to municipal budgeting, the Expenditure Control Budget system. His system has been accepted in Windham. It calls for the town council to set the tax rate before it approves any expenditures.
Westbrook High School renovations are complete.
Daniel Warren, 34, won’t seek re-election to the Scarborough Town Council. He previously served two terms in the Maine Legislature. He is a lawyer.
