Once there were 19 schools located in Windham’s various neighborhoods. Each served all elementary grades. This is the Knight School on Pope Road as it looked in 1931 when Miss Helen Allen was the teacher. The school served pupils in local area of District 6, established in 1789. The school was built to hold 48 and in 1840 there were 63 students in the 32-foot-by-22-foot building. It took two-and-a-half cords of hardwood to heat the building in 1901 when hardwood was $3.90 a cord. In 1915, a new woodshed, outhouse and chimney were built. The school closed in 1941.
