The Gorham High boys cross country team finished sixth at Saturday’s Class A state championship meet in Turner. And the Bonny Eagle boys team placed 12th at the 15 team event that was run on a wet and muddy course under sunny but cold skies.
Gorham scored 172 points and the Rams were paced by the standout performance from Tim Millett. The senior runner placed third with a time of 17:02.2, less than three seconds off the winning time from Casey Quaglia of Bangor. John Misener of Deering took second.
“There’s a huge hill out there that drained a lot of us,” said Millett about one particular portion of the course that all the runners became familiar with. “We knew about it (the hill), so we ran some hills this week.”
Gorham’s other runners included Duncan Allen (18th in 17:41), Brian Jenkins (45th in 18:27), Rob Marean (57th in 18:43), Jon Foster (62nd in 18:57), Cam Fecteau (82nd in 19:31), and Jon Schoepf (86th in 19:35).
Bonny Eagle’s top two runners on Saturday were junior Noah Schoneberg who finished 31st in 18:02 and senior Allen Cox who placed 34th in 18:05. The rest of the Bonny Eagle contingent included Murphy Doughty (46th in 18:27), Nick Winslow (80th in 19:27), Jake Voisine (84th in 19:33), Mao Ye (99th in 20:22), and John Turner (102nd in 20:37).
The Gorham girls did not qualify as a team for the state championship meet, but the Rams did have two individuals run in the Class A meet. Freshmen Kelsey Rex and Rachel Wilkinson both qualified for the event based on top 20 finishes in the Western Maine regional.
Rex finished Saturday’s race with a very respectable time of 22:15 to place 30th in her first ever state championship appearance.
“This year, having fun was my goal and I had a ton of fun training for it,” said Rex. “I felt good out there.”
The Bonny Eagle girls placed sixth out of the 14 teams at the Class A meet. The Scots scored 147 points thanks in large part to the seventh place finish of freshman Lauren Dudley (20:38) and the eighth place finish of senior Katherine Pagano (20:41).
Bonny Eagle’s other competitors also ran fine races including Ashley Cox (26th in 21:58), Amber Cronin (57th in 23:14), Katherine Thomas (63rd in 23:26), Jessica MacDonald (84th in 24:51), and Cori Summons (97th in 26:38).
Brunswick won Saturday’s Class A girls meet with a score of 78 and Catherine McAuley placed second with 85 points. The rest of the teams and their order of finish were: Scarborough, Cheverus, Mt. Ararat, Bonny Eagle, Kennebunk, Thornton Academy, Cony, Hampden Academy, Brewer, South Portland, Massabesic and Bangor.
Erica Jesseman of Scarborough won the Class A title with a time of 19:39. She was followed by Abigail Iselborn (McAuley), Kaitlyn Saldanha (Scarborough), Aemilia Lundkvist (Cheverus), Molly Peverada (Hampden Academy) and then Hewey of Sanford.
The Scarborough boys won the Class A state championship with 108 points followed by Cheverus (126), Lewiston (131), Edward Little (138) and Brunswick (161).

The Cape Elizabeth boys won the Class B state championship for the second straight year while the Mt. Desert Island girls won the Class B title.
The Class C champions were the Lisbon boys and the Freeport girls.
