Jobin scholarship semifinalist

Westbrook High School senior Zachary Jobin has been named a semifinalist for the 52nd annual National Merit Scholarship program, Principal Marc Gousse said recently.

“Zach has distinguished himself in the highest regard with respect to our school’s most challenging academic offerings,” Gousse said.

The son of Mark and Carolyn Jobin, he is one of 1.4 million juniors from nearly 21,000 high schools who entered. The nationwide semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. Jobin has a 95.5 grade point average.

Gousse said Jobin is active in a variety of clubs and service organizations at the high school. Jobin volunteers as a youth football coach. He has received a foreign language award and is vice president of the Interact Club.

Scholarships winner will be announced beginning in April.

Knight won, went West

Hillary Knight, a Westbrook High School junior, recently described a trip last summer to North Dakota – “I went on a trip like no other,” she said.

She was one of top nine winners from Maine in an essay contest. The essay topic was about today’s military values and comparing them to those of Lewis and Clark. Knight was the only junior winner, as the other eight students were seniors.

The 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition was in August. Knight was one of 300 students who attended “the rendezvous.” They visited several locations including Bismarck, Medora, Mandan and Washburn. “Also, we got to see the great Missouri and even swim in it,” Knight said.

She had never entered an essay contest before, but was encouraged by her English teacher.

The trip, she said, “will remain with me, forever.”
