State police are investigating a collision of two cruisers involving Buxton police and York County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Jonathan Shapiro, a spokesman for Maine State Police at Troop A in Alfred, said Buxton Police Officer Brad Gaumont and York County Deputy Sheriff Shawn Sanborn were uninjured in the collision, which occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 3 on Pinkham Road in Buxton. Shapiro said each cruiser sustained an estimated $5,000 in damages.

Shapiro said both officers had been chasing a driver, who was speeding, in a brief pursuit on Pinkham Road. The speeder abruptly turned left into a driveway. He said Gaumont, who was leading the pursuit, slowed down and tried to turn left and Sanborn was unable to avoid hitting the Buxton cruiser.

Sanborn’s vehicle struck the Buxton cruiser on the driver’s side door. The Buxton cruiser is a 2005 Chevrolet. The York County cruiser, a 2006 Chevrolet, sustained damage to the front end.

State Trooper Kevin Strout investigated the accident. Shapiro referred questions about the speeder to Buxton Police Department. Buxton Police Chief Jody Thomas and Maurice Ouellette, who was recently elected York County sheriff, could not be reached for comment by American Journal deadline.

Dan Collomy, chairman of Buxton selectmen, said Tuesday the town hadn’t heard how much of the damage to cruiser would be covered by insurance. Collomy said acquiring insurance information would be the first step to repairing the town’s damaged cruiser.

Collomy said the town has four cruisers and uses two on each of the three shifts.
