The Gorham ice hockey team took on the defending Class A and Class B state champions in back-to-back games this week and the Rams played very well in both contests. Unfortunately, playing very well doesn’t always produce wins against the top teams and Gorham dropped a 7-5 decision to Cheverus on Saturday and they suffered an 8-7 loss to the Capers on Monday afternoon.

Against Cape, the Rams led 3-2 after the first period thanks to a pair of goals from Justin Grandmaison and a score from David Gushee. (Brendan Ryan, Roop and Violette all had assists during the first 15 minutes of play.)

Cape’s two goals came off the sticks of Davis and Pearson with Andrew Gibson getting assists on both scores.

The Capers tied the game at 5-5 in the second period with goals from Gibson (assists to Pearson and Labbe), Rich (assist to Kelley) and Knight (assist to Davis and Pearson).

Gorham had another goal from Gushee (assist to Grandmaison) and they picked up another score off an unassisted goal by Alex Dahms.

Gushee and Grandmaison completed their hat trick performances with third period goals that gave the Rams a brief 7-6 lead midway through the final period. But the Capers scored twice in the last six minutes of regulation to edge the Rams by a single goal.

Gibson scored his second goal of the game (from Davis) and Tremblay added a goal at 9:18 to tie the score at 7-7. The game-winner was scored by Eubanks at 11:14 with an assist going to Rich.

Phil Jordan had 26 saves in net for the Capers and Brendon Foley made 26 saves in goal for the Rams.

Gorham’s loss dropped their record to 2-7 and the Capers improved to 2-7 with the win.

Gorham hosted Portland on Wednesday evening and they’ll travel to Greely on Saturday night.

Cape was at Leavitt on Wednesday and they are at Brewer on Saturday night.
