Bonny Eagle had two hurdlers tie school records as the Scots finished third with 81 points in a tightly contested SMAA meet last Saturday at the Portland Expo.

Thornton Academy was first with 98 points and Deering second with 82.

All boys’ and girls’ SMAA teams will compete in the Southwestern Championship meets Saturday also at the Portland Expo.

“I think we can compete with the two we ran against Saturday.” Bonny Eagle coach John Turrell said. “Scarborough is ahead of us, but second place is wide open.”

Saturday, freshman Sarah Ferry won the junior 45 hurdles in 6.9 seconds, tying the school record set by Katlyn Gardiner two years ago.

Gardiner, now a junior, tied the school record of 6.7 seconds set in 1996 while winning the Sr. 45 hurdles.

Bonny Eagle also won the junior 840 relay.

“We have some high placers and some depth, which is why this has been the best season we’ve had in indoor in the history of the school,” Turrell said. “Our record is 13-3. Previously the best record was 9-3, which was last year.

“We have an outstanding freshman class.”

The Bonny Eagle boys’ team finished second in its meet with 84.5 points. Deering was first with 116.

Nick Winslow won the Jr. 45 hurdles with a time of 6.1 seconds, the time in the event by any athlete this season. Mao Ye (Jr. 600), Noah Schoneberg (Jr. 300) and Khamla Mickelson (Jr. 40) also won their events. Like Winslow, Mickelson’s time in the Jr. 40 was the fastest in the event this season.
