Seventh-ranked Bonny Eagle (15-5) defeated No. 10 Westbrook in a West A ice hockey prelim on Friday night at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham. The Scots’ 5-2 win sets up a quarterfinal match-up with No. 2 Biddeford (17-3) on Tuesday evening at the Biddeford Ice Arena.

Bonny Eagle beat Westbrook earlier in the season scoring four first period goals en route to a 6-1 victory. Friday night’s game didn’t see much in the way of scoring until the final period when the Scots put away the Blazes with three goals after Westbrook had pulled within 3-1.

Travis Dunn got Bonny Eagle on the board (assist from Nate Jewell) at 8:26 of the first period. Both teams had several decent opportunities to score in those first 15 minutes of play, but both goalies – Preston Peabbles of Westbrook and Cody Bradway of Bonny Eagle – made the stops they needed to make.

The Scots increased their lead to 3-0 in the second period thanks to a power play goal from Kayle Hamilton (assist to Dunn) and an unassisted score from Brett Dostie.

Westbrook made it interesting when Tyler Rand netted the Blazes’ first goal of the game at 2:44 of the third (from Layne Kearney-Graffam) to make the score 3-1. The Blazes hoped for another quick score seize the momentum and put pressure on the Scots, but it was Bonny Eagle who lit the lamp next.

Hamilton scored his second goal of the game a minute later and the Scots’ lead became more comfortable at 4-1. Matt Buotte scored midway through the final period to get the Blazes with two goals at 4-2, but the Blazes were unable to get that important “next” goal which would have brought them within a score of the Scots.

Nate Jewell completed the scoring with a Bonny eagle goal at 12:02 of the third.

Peabbles finished with 25 saves for Westbrook and Bradway had 13 saves in net for the Scots.
