Westbrook High scheduling changes

The Meet the Coach session scheduled for Thursday, May 10 with new Westbrook High football coach Daryl Weiss has been postponed because of a conflict with the funeral arrangements of Billy Hamilton. A new date has not been set.

The baseball game with Bonny Eagle, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, has been rescheduled to Monday, May 14, for the same reason.

Locals lead St. Joe’s baseball

Saint Joseph’s College defeated Husson College by an 8-3 score on Sunday in the North Atlantic Conference championship game. The win gives the Monks an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament for the second consecutive year.

Helping lead the way for the Monks are veteran southpaw Ben Cutter of Westbrook, pitcher Andrew Keirstead of Westbrook, designated hitter Chris Doughty of Westbrook, and Dustin Spiller of Gorham.

Cutter picked up the deciding win for the Monks in the championship contest. He held the Eagles at bay for six strong

innings, allowing two runs on just four hits. He also recorded three strikeouts en route to upping his personal record to 7-1 on the year. Andrew Keirstead went the final three innings to earn his second save of the year. His final pitch of the afternoon was a called third

strike that caused the Monks’ bench to erupt in celebration of the NAC tournament championship.

Schmidt named rookie of the week

Freshman left-handed pitcher Mark Schmidt (Gorham) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team was recently named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of April 30-May 6.

In two appearances during that week, the 5-foot-11 southpaw pitched 8.2 innings without allowing a run.

He picked up his second win of the season in the Huskies’ 5-0 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. He worked seven innings giving up five singles and a walk while fanning five.

Schmidt then came on in relief against the University of Maine on

Wednesday, May 3, pitching 1.2 innings without giving up a hit or walk.

On the season, Schmidt has compiled a 2-1 record with a 3.41 earned run average. He has pitched 37 innings giving up 40 hits and 15 walks while striking out 24. In five starts, Schmidt has racked up a 2-1 record with a 1.45 ERA.
