Gorham 4
Biddeford 2
The Gorham baseball team improved to 9-2 on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Biddeford at St. Louis Field. Gorham’s Andrew Dean allowed just four hits and two runs over six innings of work.
The Tigers’ runs were courtesy of Tyler Fleurent’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Dean pitched well and kept Biddeford at bayand his defense came up big on several occasions
“Defensively that’s probably as good as we’ve played,” said Gorham coach Rocky Myers. “Joel Mundy played great. (Biddeford) Coach Crepeau just commented on two of those plays he made in the hole with two outs and runners in scoring position. The game could be different in a hurry if he doesn’t make those plays.”
The Rams got on the board right away scoring a run in the top of the first. Mundy led off the game with a single and promptly stole second. Justin Grandmaison doubled and Mundy scored easily.
Jamie Lamontagne got things going again for Gorham when he doubled to start the third. John Mitchell soon singled to score Lamontagne for a 2-0 Rams advantage.
The visitors added to their lead in the fifth. Brian Jenkins led off with a base hit and he stole second to put himself in scoring position. Mundy then singled to score Jenkins.
In the bottom half of the inning, Fleurent knocked in Nick Reny with a two-run shot over the fence in left field cutting the Rams’ lead to 3-2.
Gorham added an insurance run in their next at-bat. Dean doubled leading off the inning and he scored on a fielder’s choice from Kyle Egbert.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers had their last good scoring chance. Brad Carlton led off the inning with a double to the left field corner, but he was later thrown out at third trying to advance on a passed ball.
“I think it was a little miscommunication,” Crepeau said. “I don’t think he knew where the ball was and the bench was yelling. He was being aggressive and I’ll never get upset with someone being aggressive. It was just a tough spot there. Brad had a leadoff double and we had a spark going. I was hoping we could get one or more there but it didn’t happen.”
The Rams brought in Tony MacMillon to pitch the bottom of the seventh and he retired the Tigers in order recording two strikeouts.
Gorham was scheduled to play South Portland on Thursday.
“I’ve been at this foolishness too long,” Myers said. “What the Heal Points say today or next week doesn’t matter. When it’s over we will know where we stand. Right now we’re playing to get the home field.”
The Tigers fall to 5-6 with the loss. They were scheduled to face Sanford on Thursday.
“I think we are in the middle of the pack with the points,” said Crepeau. “A couple more points would move us up. This would have been a huge win. I was hoping to win and get in a decent spot and wind up hosting. But without this one that will be tough. So we just want to play consistent day in and day out.”
