On May 26, the Gorham boys track team celebrated an SMAA championship win, giving them much-needed momentum going into last weekend’s Class A state meet at Bath.
But that momentum wasn’t nearly enough for the Rams as they were unable to overcome strong performances from Bangor and Edward Little. Bangor won the state championship meet with Edward Little taking the runner-up spot and Gorham finishing third.
Gorham senior Josh Maxwell did win two individual championships for the Rams.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Maxwell took the title with a time of 15.18, clipping out runners from Lewiston and Bonny Eagle by less than a second. Maxwell also won the 300-meter hurdle championship with a time of 40.03. This was also a close race, with Maxwell edging out second-place runner Mason Shepard of Deering by four-tenths of a second.
Besides winning two titles in the hurdles, Maxwell also placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.47 and he continued his highly successful meet by finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 22.93.
Senior Kyle Perkins captured second in the pole vault with a top vault of 13-06.
In the 400-meter dash, freshman Cam Stevens took third place with a time of 50.94, just over a second behind winner Cameron Cormier of Bangor.
The Rams’ relay teams also fared well at the state meet, posting two third place finishes in the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400.
The 4 x 100 team of senior Cam Fecteau, junior Andrew Arena, senior Kyle Perkins and junior Justin Villacci narrowly missed finishing second with a time of 44.70 – a half-second behind second place Bangor.
The 4 x 400 team of Fecteau, Stevens, Perkins and senior Jake Brown finished third with a time of 3:31.41.
Other notable performances for the Rams included a seventh place finish in the 1,600-meter race walk by sophomore Lucas Sieferth, a fifth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles for senior Brett Connolly and a seventh place effort in the javelin for senior Kyle Brown.
Gorham girls finish fifth in state
The Gorham girls team also had a good meet, finishing fifth overall with 47 points.
The highlight of the meet for the Rams was a state championship in the 4 x 100 relay. The team of freshman Kayleigh Ballantyne, junior Leigh Maniscalo, freshman Marissa Owens and Alyson Fearon beat runner-up Scarborough by just under a second with a time of 50.75.
Several members of the Rams’ girls team came close to winning individual state titles. Fearon just missed a title in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.78. She was just nine-hundredths of a second behind winner Kristin Slotnick of Brunswick.
Fearon and Slotnick also had a duel in the 200-meter dash. Fearon again finished as the runner-up posting a time of 26.25, just .51 seconds behind Slotnick. And Fearon was closely followed by teammate Maniscalo, who finished third with a time of 26.72.
Maniscalo also beat the existing state record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.82. Unfortunately for Maniscalo, that was only good for third place as Jesse Labreck of Messalonskee and Bethany Dumas of Cony finished ahead of her.
Maniscalo also finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.11.
In the 1,600-meter race walk, junior Liz Demski finished third with a time of 8:51.14.

The Blue Blazes’ boys team failed to score any points at the state meet, but the squad did have two top-15 finishes.

While the Scots fell short in capturing any individual state titles, they did come very close in two events.
In the triple jump, sophomore Jamie Ruginski finished second with a distance of 42-00. The Scots also came close to an individual title in the 110-meter hurdles as sophomore Nate Doehler finished third in 15.97.
Doehler had a strong meet for the Scots, finishing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 41.23. He also finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 161-02.
The Scots also got a fourth place finish from Allen Cox in the 1,600-meter race walk. The senior finished the race in 7:36.62.
The Scots’ 4 x 800 relay team of Ruginski, junior Murphy Doughty, junior Mao Ye and junior Noah Schoneberg placed seventh with a time of 8:29.18.
Just like the boys team, the Bonny Eagle girls also scored 27 points at Saturday’s meet, which was good for a ninth place tie with Biddeford and Lewiston.
The 4 x 100 relay team of junior Katlyn Gardiner, sophomore Natasha Jamison, senior Amber Cronin and freshman Melissa Carrier was the top scorer for the Scots, finishing third with a time of 51.67, just under one second behind first place Gorham.
Carrier also placed well in two other individual events. She took fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.02 and placed fifth in the 200 at 27.14.
The Scots also had two top finishers in the 1,600-meter run. Senior Katherine Pagano finished fifth with a time of 5:26.76. Close behind her was freshman teammate Lauren Dudley, who crossed the finish line in sixth at 5:30.59.
