The polls opened at 6 a.m. today for Buxton voters who will pick two selectmen and decide whether to borrow $1.8 million for a public works garage and approve a $38.9 million SAD 6 budget.

Town Clerk John Myers anticipated 1,200 voters, a 20 percent turnout. The polls will be open until 8 p.m. at town hall, 185 Portland Road, for the local articles and the state referendums. The municipal budget will be decided in town meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Buxton voters will also consider hiring a part time town planner and whether to spend $150,000 for repairs of the former town hall in Buxton Center. Hiram Davis, who was appointed as election warden for the state ballot, was also elected moderator at 5:30 a.m. for the town meeting. Myers administered the oath of office to Davis.

Keith Emery, who is unopposed for his three-year seat on the planning board, was the first to cast a ballot at 6 a.m. Emery, also an employee of Buxton’s public works department, voted no on the new garage.

“I voted against the town garage due to the money,” Emery said.
