Tickets Unlimited won the 2007 regular season championship with a final record of 13-2. Kiwanis and Messer tied for second with identical records of 11-4 as all teams head to the playoffs.
Tickets split their final two games of the regular season to win the pennant. They defeated Sappi 6-1 behind the pitching of Mike Pena (complete game four-hitter with 13 strikeouts).
Sappi’s Keenan Lowe (8 K’s) and Kaleb Kent combined for six strong innings on the mound. Sappi’s only run came on a nice base running play by Dallas Turpin.
Dairy Queen knocked off Tickets 12-8 in the upset of the season. John O’Hara set the tone for Dairy Queen with a three-run homer in the first Inning. Then in extra innings, Noah Thompson had the big hit with a towering double over the left fielder to plate two runs. Tickets got some nice pitching from Isaac Theriault and Jacob Webster along with a great effort from Curtis Knapton behind the plate.
Kiwanis moved into a tie for second place with Messer on the strength of two victories. Kiwanis downed Phoenix Welding with solid play from rookies Nick Zabenko, Greg Buotte and Tristian Savage. Defensively, Noah Collins led the way with two gems at second base.
In the game that decided second place, Kiwanis beat Messer 12-4 behind the solid pitching of Kevin Grescoviak, Aaron Duncanson, Zack Bean and DJ Breunig. Offensively, it was a team effort with Grescoviak, Collins, DJ Breunig, Bean and Chris Beahm leading the way.
Evan Dipietrantonio and Cody Champaign both had three hits apiece for Messer in a losing effort.
In another game, it was the Eagles defeating Phoenix Welding 9-5. Paul Patriotti led the way with two hits and many good defensive plays. Kaleb Bourassa and Jon Doucette led the way for Pheonix with two hits apiece.
And the Lions defeated Sappi 18-2 in the final game of the regular season.
Playoff games
The double elimination playoff games began this weekend with Tickets, Kiwanis, Sappi and Messer advancing to the winner’s bracket.
Tickets turned the tables on Dairy Queen with a 9-1 victory in the first round of the playoffs. Andrew McCarthy, Mike Pena, and Jeremiah Steele combined for a two-hitter while striking out 17 batters.
Amber Gedaro broke up a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth inning and was then knocked in by Abe Thompson’s double.
James Phelps had a nice hit and a sacrifice fly to knock in a run for Tickets, while Dillon Boutin had a nice line drive single in the fifth inning.
Sappi defeated the Eagles in a close game, 4-2. Keenen Lowed pitched four strong innings and Kaleb Kent picked up the save. Cale Bollig and Chan Todd pitched well for the Eagles, but could not handle the hot-hitting Kent who finished with three doubles.
Paul Patriotti led the way offensively with a home run and a double. Marty McInnis turned in two outstanding plays in the outfield to keep the game close. The Eagles had the tying runs on base in the last inning, but a double play ended the game.
Kiwanis also advanced to the winner’s brackett with a win over Phoenix. Kiwanis moved ahead with timely hits from Kevin Grescoviak, DJ Breunig, Zack Bean and Gregory Buotte. The Kiwanis team had very solid pitching especially from Noah Collins who came in to pitch very well.
In the closest game of the day, it was Messer taming the Lions, 3-2, in 11 innings. Tyler Eastman had a game-winning bunt single to advance Messer to the next round. Austin Watts pitched five strong innings giving up only two runs. He was relieved by Andrew St. Clair who had the game of a lifetime. Andrew hit his first Little League home run in the first inning and he then pitched four innings without giving up a run.
Ian King pitched the last two innings to pick up the win. Cody Champaign went 3-for-4 with a walk and a home run to lead Messer. Collin Joyce pitched well for the Lions.
