Gorham baseball player Andrew Dean was selected as this year’s Most Valuable Player in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association. It was the second straight year that a Gorham player was selected as the league’s MVP. In 2006, the Rams’ Mark Schmidt won the award.

The senior pitcher/outfielder helped lead the Rams to a second-place finish in Western Maine Class A with a 12-3 regular season record. In those 15 games, Dean had a .432 batting average with 13 runs scored and 29 total bases. He led the team in hits (19), slugging percentage (.659), and on-base-percentage (.519).

His regular season pitching stats are equally impressive. He finished with a 5-0 record and a 1.77 earned run average. He struck out 26 batters in 31.2 innings of work and he allowed just eight earned runs.

Dean was also a first team SMAA all-star selection at both positions – pitcher and outfield. He’ll be attending the University of Maine at Farmington this fall where he plans on playing basketball and baseball. (He was the SMAA basketball player of the year as well.)

“He definitely had a great year,” said Gorham baseball coach Rocky Myers. “He’s a big reason why we had the year we did.”

Joining Dean on the SMAA all-star squad is teammate Justin Grandmaison. Another Gorham senior, Grandmaison made the first team at third base and he was selected to the second team as a pitcher. In addition, Grandmaison was also voted onto the all-defensive team by the league’s coaches.

Grandmaison batted .347 in 15 regular season games with 17 hits and 13 runs scored. He had a .605 slugging percentage and a .469 on-base percentage. On the mound, he went 4-0 with a 2.19 earned run average in 32 innings of work. He struck out 25 and he held opposing teams to a .203 batting average.

Gorham junior outfielder Ryan McMullen was selected to the league’s all-rookie team.

And Gorham High baseball coach Rocky Myers was chosen as the league Coach of the Year.

Hamiltons get league recognition

Westbrook’s Christian Hamilton was selected to the Southwestern Maine Activities Association first team all-star baseball squad as a utility player. The Blazes’ Adam Hamilton also made the team. He was a second team choice in the outfield.

Christian is just a sophomore. In 15 regular season games he batted .447 with 21 hits and 16 runs scored. He had a .532 slugging percentage and a .527 on-base percentage. He also led the Blazes with six stolen bases in seven attempts. Christian also went 3-2 on the mound with a 1.70 earned run average. He struck out 27 batters in 33 innings of work and he allowed just eight earned runs.

Adam is a senior. He batted .353 with 18 hits and 28 total bases. He was 2-0 on the mound with two complete games pitched and a 3.00 earned run average.
